Putting out a fan game and gaining a following off of that is very advantageous to the developer, and also for the community if they enjoy it.

Putting out an original game hoping it will get seen without having a prior following is extremely difficult.

By working on a fangame, the dev gets more experience on making games in general, and by putting it out there they recieve feedback. Lisa the Pointless does that and so much more. Seriously? I support many kinds of content made in support of media, especially those that cherish the spirit of the original. To even imply that folks should consider financially supporting a fan game, that relies on creative content they have no rights to is absurd at best.
